Why Is It Important to be Organised in Life?

It’s easy to look at organised people and question, "how on earth do they do it?" They make it look easy to to have their lives together.

They’re always where they need to be at the right time, you’ll never catch them missing an appointment, being caught short without something they need or double booking themselves and getting in a tiz. Their lives seem to run seamlessly- you might have found yourself wishing ‘I wish I was more like that.’ However, you don’t need to wish, being organised isn’t a talent any of us are born with- it’s a skill that can be learned and perfected.

Even if you’re constantly late, running around like a headless chicken and losing your stuff (and it feels like you’ll never be able to change) there’s hope for everyone! It can take time and effort to gain control of your life in this way, but if you’re serious about making a change for the better, getting organised is one of the best things you’ll ever do.

Here are a few reasons why.

You’ll stay in control of your money
Money is something that each and every one of us needs to master in adulthood. Unless you’re lucky enough to be incredibly wealthy, you’re going to be working to a budget and managing money in some way. Get this wrong and you’ll quickly fall behind with payments, you can run up arrears and even get into debt. Let this spiral and you can find yourself having to deal with bailiffs and debt collectors and getting yourself in a really stressful situation. While there’s help out there, from debt charities to solicitors like McCarthy Law PLC who can give you advice if you get stuck- of course, prevention is always better than cure. Budgeting your money, making sure all of your important outgoings are paid first and saving are great ways to get organised with your money. You could have all of your bills taken out of a separate bills account via direct debt which saves you from having to make manual payments so nothing is ever missed. You could even automate your savings, setting up a standing order to be taken out of your wages each payday and transfer directly to a savings account. If you’re constantly running out of money, going overdrawn and getting in a fluster with money then this is an area of your life that’s so worth getting organised in.

You’ll manage your weight better
Despite the fact that we know more about health than ever before, we’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic. One of the main reasons for this is that delicious, unhealthy food is so easily available these days. There are fast food restaurants at every turn, apps that will deliver your favourite takeaway to your door 24/7. This kind of temptation can be hard to resist, but getting organised with your meals can definitely make it easier. Get into the habit of writing up a menu plan for the week, and then grocery shop based on this. That way you always have the ingredients you need on hand, you don’t find yourself stood in the kitchen at 6pm with nothing in and thinking ‘Oh well, I’ll order a pizza.’ Cooking for yourself means you’ll save massively on calories, fat, salt and sugar as you’re in control. So plan out what you’re going to have, if you have all of the ingredients you need you can put together the meals of your choice and not be tempted by unhealthy options.

You’ll use your time better
Time is so precious, we’re all on time limits and need to make the most of what we have. Most of us have to fit in work and other commitments such as attending appointments, running a home, taking care of children or family members. If you’re disorganised it’s so easy to drop the ball, you can miss important things, find yourself running late and generally feel as though there aren’t enough hours in the day. Get serious and prioritise your time- that hour spent scrolling through your phone at night would be better spent sleeping. That weekend binge watching Netflix could be used to do something productive. It’s not to say you need to be constantly on the go (as that’s incredibly unhealthy). It means work out where you’re wasting time and use that time better. Schedule time to relax and unwind too, that way you can enjoy it guilt free. Get into the habit of writing to- do lists for the week or day ahead so you know where you need to be, at what time and what you’ll need for each task.

You’ll reduce stress levels
Because of all of the reasons above, being organised will help you to manage your stress levels. You know where you’re supposed to be, and at what time as you’ve scheduled your days. You’ll get up in the morning and your clothes will be ready where you made the effort to lay them out the night before. Your lunch will be packed, and you’ll get out of the door without any hassle. You’ll know where to find all of your possessions and putting them away will be just as easy. These might all sound like small things, but often stress in life really is a series of small things. If you can take care of these daily hassles you might be surprised at how much better you feel and how much your mental health improves.
