The first year of any relationship is often one of the most memorable and wonderful. We’re absolutely not suggesting ‘it’s all downhill from here,’ as those dripping with cynicism might have you believe. However, the first is always the freshest, and so it can be wonderful to make this first Christmas as a couple one for the ages. If you haven’t noticed, this year has been flying by very quickly, and Christmas is no different. At the time of this writing, we are just under one month away from Christmas 2018. This year has had its ups and downs, but there’s no reason why it can’t be capped off in the most beautiful manner possible.

To focus on the love and joy of the season, here are some tips that may help.

Financing & Gifts
Of course, while many might say that gifts shouldn’t matter (and this is true,) it’s likely that you’re going to want to spend Christmas with your other half and impress them with your gift. It could be that you hope to review this good article to help you finance an amazing gift, or potentially craft something yourself. Your other half might drop hints in advance, or you might have written something near the start of the relationship that you just know will make the perfect gift. You don’t need to gift them something absolutely crazy, or something that ties you together such as a new vehicle. But, something loving, something that shows you’ve thought of them, and something that you can enjoy together can often work wonders. It might be you decide to purchase jewelry, or nice clothing, or tickets to an event can work the best here.

We’d also recommend, it’s in your price range of course, purchasing an experience. It might be that heading abroad with someone you love could truly give you that deep sense of connection and adventure, and we all know that adventure is the best thing we can be given.
Spending Time Abroad
It might be that heading on vacation, no matter how humble, could be the most beautiful choice you make this Christmas period. You might decide to rent a humble cabin in Norway, and spend a couple of weeks exploring the towns, perhaps going skiing, or generally connecting to those around you with love in your heart. You might decide to head to Disneyland as adults who are on the verge of connecting with their childhood again, or potentially visit the homeland of one of your countries of origin. Spending time abroad connects you with your companion, and this is especially true when that person is someone you care for deeply. Christmas, on top of this, also has that pure love, that love distinct from simple romantic love. At this time of year, sitting in a comfortable cafe sharing hot chocolate with your loved one can be just as intimate as cuddling in the hotel room. Christmas has that power, especially when sharing those smiles with those you meet.
Spending Significant Time With Their Family
This can be a worrying one, particularly if you haven’t spent much time with their family in the past. However, if you are on kind speaking terms, it might mean a lot to your other half and their family if you accept an invitation to spend Christmas with them. You might decide to get a nearby hotel, because staying at a boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s parents house within your first year together might be considered slightly awkward, especially if you’re sharing the bed of the room they grew up in. You can plan this event how you feel comfortable, and if your other half is considerate, they should support you. However, this can be a great time to get to know their family, to help out with dinner, to relax with them and to maybe drink a bottle of wine or two indulgently. This can also serve as an instructive period, where you learn that perhaps his uncle is a little off, or that he comes from a very strange family home. However, it can also help you connect with an extra family, potentially receive a blessing from his parents in the form of an unspoken approval, but most importantly potentially help you all have a wonderful Christmas. All we’re suggesting is that you don’t rule it out. If this doesn’t sound worthwhile to you, perhaps inviting them to your family home could be worthwhile, or putting that off until the next year. After all, there’s no hard and fast rule that says you need to be this intimate with their family right now, no matter the holiday.
Thoughtful Activities
Thoughtful activities can bring you together like nothing else. It might be you arrange a trip for them for the weekend, or craft a treasure hunt around the house with small romantic notes, or book you both a wonderful Christmas dinner, or even tickets to a wonderful theatre show. Thoughtful activities and surprises are the crux of Christmas, even if it comes in the form of a novelty knitted jumper with your facial likeness on. A little silly forethought, the willingness to spend time together, and a little heartfelt emotional expression can go a long way to make this Christmas the best one yet. Who knows? This might be the time you actually say those three cherished words.

Go Through Tradition
The first Christmas together can be a very cutesy time if you follow tradition. Waking up to presents and filled stockings you have given one another, relaxing on the sofa, eating Christmas lunch together, playing video games, being goofy and perhaps drinking a little too much wine sounds like a wonderful Christmas to us, no matter who you are. We couldn’t blame you for jumping into this saccharine flow of events. It’s exactly what the first year of a relationship warrants.
With these simple tips, spending Christmas as a couple for the first time is sure to be something you share and cherish.
