So you’ve just passed your driving test and are finally free to go out of the roads without adult supervision, but do you know how to drive safely? A lot of young drivers presume that a few lessons and a driving test is all that’s needed to be a safe driver, but that’s not the case at all.
You can legally drive yes, but that’s not to say you have the level of experience or the skills that a lot of older drivers have, which is why your car insurance premium is so much more expensive than your parents’ premiums.

The good news is you can easily become a safer driver. it’s just a case of knowing what it takes to do that. To help you drive more safely, below are some useful tips and pieces of advice.

Practice makes perfect
The key to becoming a better driver is practice. The more practice you do on the roads, the better. What you want to do is become a confident driver, someone who is comfortable on the roads and enjoys driving. What you don’t want to do is mistake cockiness for confidence, because that’s a recipe for disaster, especially as a new driver. You want to drive as much as you can so that you improve your driving and gain the confidence that you need.

Get a little extra help
Just because you’ve passed your test, that doesn’t have to mean that’s it for your learning. Oh no, you can still continue to learn and improve your driving skills, it’s just a case of being willing to do so. There are plenty of courses that you can take, including one from a defensive driving traffic school online that can be done remotely. So it’s worth making the time to improve your driving skills, so that you can be a safer driver and feel more comfortable when out and about on the roads.

Don’t drive with a full car
The chances are that now you’ve passed your test, all your friends will want to get a lift with you. However, as a new driver, driving with a full car is not a good idea, it’s a recipe for complete disaster as the more people in your car, the more likely you are to get distracted. So for the first few months after passing your test, aim to keep it to just two passengers, and no more than that. Then, as you get more confident on the roads, you can then start driving with more people in your car.

Speed limits aren’t there to be challenged
When it comes to speed limits, remember that exceeding them isn’t the aim, the idea is to stay within them. Far too many teenage drivers think it’s cool to exceed the speed limit, but the reality is that you will either cause a crash or end up with points on your license, so ask yourself whether it’s really worth speeding. The chances are you will realize that the answer is no, it’s not worth speeding because the risks are too high.

As a new driver, it can be daunting being on the roads, especially when you are desperate to be a good driver.
Follow tips, focus and look ahead. As a new driver, you finally take over the wheel.
