Myths About Breaking Up You Shouldn't Believe

1/4/2016

Navigating relationships is something that no one ever learns to do perfectly. You can pick up many lessons, but you'll never be an expert. It doesn't help that there are always myths and misinformation that everyone else is more than happy to share with you. People might think that they're helping you. But in reality, they could be making things harder. They're never more content to give out what they think is good advice than when you're going through a breakup.

Watch out for some of these myths to make sure you don't end up sabotaging yourself.

You Should Never Get Back Together
Many people will tell you that once a relationship is over, it's done for good. You can never get back with someone after they break up with you or you break up with them. They will say that asking someone to take you back makes you look weak. But there are no rules when it comes to calling time on a relationship. Sometimes it's over forever, but you may just need time to think about your priorities. If you think your relationship shouldn't be over just yet, a program like the Magic of Making Up could help you to get back together. You can learn how to assess yourself and your relationship to fix things and be happier and healthier.

It's Always Someone's Fault
Whenever a couple breaks up, everyone starts to look for someone to blame. But there doesn't always have to be a victim and a wrongdoer. Sometimes you're just not compatible with each other, even if both people don't recognize it yet. You might want to analyze why the breakup occurred, but that doesn't mean deciding whose fault it is. Both of you may have played a part in the breakdown of the relationship, or no one could have done anything wrong. It's not automatically the fault of whoever initiated the breakup. Remember that no matter who did the breaking up, it means that you aren't right for each other.

Initiating the Breakup is Easier
There is a common belief that being the one to start the breakup is easier. If you're the one doing the breakup, you should get over it quicker, right? However, keep in mind that there is no evil breakup initiator and poor person being broken up with. It can be just as painful to realize that a relationship isn't working and that you have to be the one to end it. It would be crueler to carry on the relationship, knowing that it's not going to work. If you're the one to initiate the breakup, you are still allowed time to get over it.

Everyone Needs Time to Mope
If movies are to be believed, there's one way women, in particular, deal with a breakup. However, you don't have to spend days in your PJs, crying and eating ice-cream. Everyone deals with a breakup differently, so don't feel you have to do it in any one way. Find your own methods of coping and of moving on.
Don't fall for these myths when you're going through a breakup. Even though your friends are trying to help, it doesn't mean they're right.
