How You Can Help Others in a Librarian Career

What do you think the role of your local librarian really is? You might picture them spending most of their time shelving books, but there's a lot more to their job. If you want to be a librarian, you need at least a master's degree.

One of the most fun parts of being a librarian is recommending reading materials to others. As someone who hopefully has an extensive knowledge of books and other publications, you can spend your time talking to customers about their next read.

Give Tech Help
If you're also interested in technology, you can use your skills to pass on your knowledge. Librarians need to be tech-savvy and know about everything from databases to iPhones. They can help with any technical questions or problems their customers might have.

Make Information Easier to Find
A library science degree teaches librarians how to organize and catalog materials, understand statistics, and look up information when it's needed. In your career as a librarian, you can help people to find out anything they need to know, whether it's where to find a particular book or how to file their taxes.

Teach Media Literacy
Librarians can also help people to understand how to research and read critically. They're experts at telling fake news from real news and looking at any source with a critical eye. If you want to be part of the fight against fake news, being a librarian could be for you.
