How Nursing Is Changing

There are always changes and developments in the nursing world, which is an industry that is always pushing forward and trying to improve. One such method that is increasingly popular is creating a working environment that allows nurses to grow and develop in their role, and ultimately become leaders in the nursing profession. While this has obvious benefits for patients, there is also a much sought after benefit for medical institutions, too: it reduces staff turnover. Indeed, in one case, turnover decreased by 12% when nurses were given the opportunity to take on more responsibilities and advance their careers. 

Part of this increased emphasis on developing nursing skills comes from the changing demographics of the nursing workforce. In the coming years, some 75% of the workforce will be comprised of millennials, and they're asking for different things that older generations. They want their skills to be developed, but at the moment, some 63% of millennials don't believe this to be the case.

It's not just for the nurses' benefit that these critical skills are needed. They ultimately help the patients and the hospital, too. In the modern environment, it's important that nurses are aware of the latest medical trends and know how to implement them into the practice. If they can transform the culture and structure of the hospital, then everyone will benefit.
