Foolproof Ways To Boost Your Employability

Getting a job is tough, and standing out amongst the crowd can be even tougher. Luckily, one sure-fire way to improve your chances is by having special skills that others might not. Even if you don’t need a new job right now, these skills could take a while to develop. So, get started and you’ll be investing in your future. From volunteering to learning a new language. From being able to offer a second language to being able to administer first aid.

Read on for a handful of ways to boost your employability.

Get help with your CV
You might be the best person for a job for miles around, but what if your writing skills are letting you down? Having a poor CV doesn’t mean you are a bad candidate, but it can put employers off. This is especially true for jobs like teaching or admin. Remember, there is no shame in asking for help. There are lots of companies out there who can aid you either in person or online. They can look at what you are already putting out there and suggest improvements. Get them to proofread the content as well. This can also be valuable as even the smallest typo could make the difference.

Become a volunteer
There are tonnes of options out there for volunteering. Perhaps you could do a few hours on the weekend at a charity shop? Or, a couple of hours a week at an animal shelter? If you can show a would-be employer than you don’t spend your evenings and weekends slumped on the sofa, they are sure to be impressed.

Learn a new language
Learning another language is a very valuable asset for anybody, especially job-hunters. It could boost your chances of a promotion at your company, or open up

a whole new world of career options. Or, go in for the long-game. Is there a company you would love to work for one day in the future? If so, find out if they have strong business relations abroad or offices in another country. If they are big in South America, for example, study Spanish. By getting to at least a basic level, you can mention that you are already in the process of gaining this skill. Not only does this make you more employable, but it also proves that you are thinking long-term. Companies don’t like to hire staff who will leave after a short time. If for some reason it doesn’t work out with the company you had in mind, that is okay. You still learned a very valuable skill that somewhere else will greatly respect and be impressed by further down the line.

Get a First Aid Qualification
It is compulsory for all companies to have at least one person in the office who is trained in first aid. If you go up for a job, be sure to mention this. If it’s a toss up between you and one other candidate at the end, this could be the thing that clinches the deal!
