Whiter teeth, better breath, stronger gums, healthy mouth. This sounds perfect, but like anything perfect, it doesn't just happen. It takes work. It takes dedication, and it takes knowledge. I know perfection is not necessarily the right word here, because it is arguable that perfection does not exist. But, getting close to a perfect habit of oral care is possible with the right information. I've gathered some of my favorite items, many tested and true (and recently approved by my dentist). I’ve also included some helpful resources to help you care for your smile. Even if you don’t feel like smiling.
First, let’s begin with a new favorite of mine, Euthymol Whitening Toothpaste. Made in Korea, it’s a UK brand. It is spicy, refreshing, whitening, and pretty. Dental Hygienist, Tiffany S. Kim got me hooked on it and after reading the reviews, I have become a new follower of the Euthymol Toothpaste. They also have Euthymol Purple Whitening Toothpaste (for yellow and sensitive teeth), which I have yet to try. Then, there's the OG, Euthymol Original Pink Toothpaste (it's a fluoride-free toothpaste for sensitive teeth and gums) Second, the toothbrush. Yes, the toothbrush makes all the difference. I learned from my favorite influencer dental hygienist that soft bristles are the way to go. They are smoother and kinder to the gums, and when I made the switch, I felt the difference. I was able to reach areas a strong headed toothbrush would normally miss and hurt me. I go between a manual soft bristle toothbrush (like Euthymol Whitening Toothbrush 6 Pack or Mouthwatchers Soft Flossing Manual Toothbrush, 2 pack) and my Oral-B iO3 Electric Toothbrush, which I will admit, I have gotten a few people hooked on. I love it! There are two favorites, especially after watching a review video on them (see below). Based on your needs and pocket, you can choose the one that's right for you. It is worth it. It’s better to care for the teeth now than to have to spend more later in reconstruction and painful procedures at the dentist. Not to mention, there is a correlation between poor dental hygiene and Alzheimer’s disease (read more at National Library of Medicine). So, if not for your mouth, then for your brain.
Third, the Water Flosser. This Operan Water Flosser for teeth cleaning is a rechargeable oral irrigator with four modes. We have this brand at home and right now, it's on sale. These things are underrated. Perhaps not an every day thing on its own, but it is a total game changer and worth the investment. To take it further, you can add salt or mouthwash to the water flosser and it will help remove some of that build up and keep the in-between of your teeth and gums clean. This, however, does not replace the flosser, which leads me to my fourth item.
The floss. Flossing is non-negotiable. You either do it or deal with the consequences later. It’s important to floss correctly and not harshly. Take a look at my hygienist “friend” to see the proper way. Get in between those gums gently. I like the floss picks, but I use both the string as well. To get the molars, a floss pick is most efficient for me. I also use Interdental Brushes (tiny slim brush to clean between teeth), which my gal, Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri (who received the Best Young Dentist Award in London) talks about and gives some really nice tips on maintaining proper oral health. She shares how to use the Interdental Brush here. Add some toothpaste to the brush and slide it between your teeth. It helps keep the teeth look and feel clean.
Number five goes to mouthwash. It’s important to use a good one too. I love TheraBreath Healthy Gums Mouthwash. Recently, my sister ordered her favorite mouthwash, ACT Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash with Zero Alcohol and mistakenly got it delivered to my apartment, so I was obliged to try it. It is also a great option. The squeeze technique on the bottle is rather cool. I still prefer TheraBreath (the two pack is a great deal), but given that she said to keep it, I have been using it (the ACT mouthwash) and can recommend it as well.
Whitening goes in number six. I like the Crest 3DWhite Teeth Whitening Pen for surface stains. I use it every now and then. I first dry my teeth, then I apply the gel where necessary, and let it dry for a minute or two before closing my mouth. It’s not a miracle worker, but I have noticed the shade color change a bit. I had a little stubborn stain in the back of a tooth and it has visibly brightened it up. I will say, there is this one affordable whitening kit I have yet to get my hands on, but will. It is recommended by Tiffany S. Kim and the reviews are convincing. It's called Live Orals PureDia Teeth Whitening Kit. The set includes the gel and mouthpiece along with a shade guide to track the progress. What draws me to this kit is that it is formulated with a blend of hydrogen peroxide and lettuce extract, which is supposed to be 'safe and non-damaging to the enamel or gums.' Plus, it reads as a 'gentle formulation even for sensitive teeth.' If you give it a try, let me know. I'll add to number seven, a Tongue Scraper. Given that dental hygienists as well as dentists reinforce the need to cleanse the tongue, it only makes sense to add this last one before sharing some extras. The tongue is part of the mouth and if we are adamant about removing bad bacteria, our mouth will be in good shape. Here's a good affordable option, GuruNanda Tongue Scraper for Adults (2 Pack) with Travel Case. It's 100% stainless steel and 420 medical grade. Some extras I have found helpful to keep handy are a mirror and Dental Tools Kit for those (absolutely) necessary moments. A mirror helps take a closer look, especially behind your teeth and in the back of your mouth. These tools are helpful to clean gently around the tooth. Remember, dental hygiene is not just vanity, it’s part of self-care. It’s preventative and it’s necessary. It's been helpful and life-changing for me to have all these tools and knowledge to maintain good oral hygiene. I hope it does the same for you. Years ago, I started a journey many dread, few look forward to, and some never get to - therapy. It was rough at first. Unpacking memories and making peace with a lot of things in my life came slowly. I was struggling with anxiety (shocker), and soon after, I had my very first panic attack. I was on my way to a friend’s house, driving up a hill in Hollywood, Calif. when I began to gasp for air. I was losing oxygen, my body began to tremble, and I looked at myself in the mirror in full panic and saw a pale girl looking back at me. I reached for snacks stored in my glove compartment and shoved them down my throat. I immediately thought, “my sugar is low, great, now I’m diabetic.” Half-way up the hill, my legs began to tremble and all I could formulate was, “please God, don't let me pass out here.” The weakness in my body led me to pull off to the side of the road and park. Challenging breaths convinced me I was nearing my final hours. "I am not going to die here. Not today." I pulled my car back into traffic, leaned in, chin clinched to my steering wheel, and drove. I had never been more religious in my life. I arrived at my friend's apartment explaining that my last few hours were near. Before I could give her instructions on what to do with my remains, she told me to “sit down, drink some water, and calm down.” Minutes after, I was already feeling better. I had survived my very first panic attack. I could finally call myself a citizen of Los Angeles. Aware of my anxiety, my therapist shared a few natural recommendations. GABA, 5HTP, and Happy Camper. I began my journey with 5HTP, but it was short lived given that it gave me heartburn. I tried GABA, but my reaction was yet another panic attack. I was at my parents house when I took it, and boy did I come close to my final breaths. This time, promises were made to keep me alive. Religion, again, was in full bloom. Finally, I tried Happy Camper, and I am pleased to admit I have not regretted it since. Happy Camper was the supplement I didn’t know I was missing. A non-habit forming supplement with calming and uplifting properties. It is natural, and one of its main ingredients is KAVA KAVA, which is referred to by many as "nature's Xanax." I've recommended this one to friends who have shared similar struggles and they have noticed the changes, reporting positive feedback. Its main ingredient is Passion Flower, another calming herb. Mountsinai.org wrote in an article, “Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) was used traditionally in the Americas and later in Europe as a calming herb for anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and hysteria. It is still used today to treat anxiety and insomnia.” It is also said that Passion Flower may alleviate menopausal symptoms and regulate hormone levels. I didn’t find much research on that, but that’s food for thought. Another ingredient that stands out in this super supplement is Eleuthero (root). Often referred to as Siberian Ginseng, Eleuthero has been used as an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stressors. It is also said it helps increase energy levels and stamina. Honestly, this ingredient cocktail makes sense to me because Happy Camper has been helpful when I’ve needed that mental boost that sometimes just comes in seasons. GABA, a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) in your brain (also sold as a supplement) and 5HTP may not have worked for me, but that doesn’t take away their proven results. Many people have had great success with these supplements. One final favorite, also categorized as an adoptogen, is Ashwagandha. This is one of my favorites. I use both capsules and tea when I am in need of calmness and nightly wind-downs. At least half a lemon squeeze over hot Ashwagandha tea is a great alternative for those every other day moments that feel too hard to bear. It promotes restful sleep and stress relief. Adaptogens are known to support the nervous system, they reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system. Whether it's seasonal or just a period of high stress levels, herbs and supplements can help. Always consult a doctor before taking any of these substances. They can sometimes interfere with medicines (like blood thinners, for example) and other health conditions. Consider incorporating walks into your day along with healthy food choices to help promote better sleep, happier moods, and a healthier body. Remember, everything works together. Me Before You with Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. While I selected this one without expectation, I had a feeling there was something special about it. I wasn’t wrong. It was warm, hopeful, thought-provoking, and encouraging. Just because you’re used to something, does not mean you won't like or enjoy something else. Broaden your horizons, as they say. That’s the feeling this story gave me. Perhaps it will something different for you. Whatever it may be, it is worth watching.
Last Christmas starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. After being reminded of just how charming Emilia Clarke is, mixed with the need for some holiday feel, I landed on this movie. A perspective on life and what it truly is about. Family dynamics, the messiness of life, and the beauty of it all. This movie is not just about hope, it’s about the true meaning of life.
It Ends with Us with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. The wardrobe, the set, the colors. Art plays a pivotal role in this film. Blake Lively's character, Lily, is bohemian and relatable. The story was told at a beautiful pace that was intriguing and honest. I wouldn’t mind visiting that restaurant and giving my compliments to the chef (if you know what I mean).
The Holiday with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. I’ll admit, I watch this one every year. There’s always something feminine, mature, elegant, and respectful, that holds Nancy Meyers’ screenplays. She just gets it. This film is told like a beautiful melody with accents to intensify the plot just enough to lean in. I love this film.
To conclude, I will add a few more films written by Nancy Meyers: Something's Gotta Give (Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson), The Intern (Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro), and It’s Complicated (Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin). Meyers’ storytelling is female-based, even though the male characters are equally important, the women never get lost in the story. Instead, they shine, and there is always room for relatability. Even if most of us could never afford those kitchens.
