Starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie follows the story of two leading ladies after they learned their husbands were not just gay, but in love with each other. Soon after, the women moved into the beach house (they co-owned with their ex- husbands) where they bonded and became the friends you dream of having. This groundbreaking series, highlighting the adventures of life and getting older, has something in it for everyone. Sam Waterson (Sol), Martin Sheen (Robert), Brooklyn Decker (Mallory), Ethan Embry (Coyote), Baron Vaughn (Nwabudike), and June Dian Raphael (Brianna) bring all the elements to their characters to deliver great storytelling to its viewers. Season after season the evolution of these characters has been grand, in big part due to the topics covered, which for years have been more of a joke than a serious conversation. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter Jane Fonda said, “Culture doesn’t like people with wrinkles to be talking about sex... But the fastest- growing demographic in the world are older women and a lot of them are doing it very pleasurably. When I was in my forties I said, ‘Before I die I wanna be part of giving a cultural face to older women’. And I can’t tell you how much feedback Lily and I get from women who say, ‘It’s given me hope.’" In case you missed it, Fonda and Tomlin’s character both start a business for female pleasure for the older woman. Yes, they are selling dildos. This is a topic that hasn’t been seen on a tv show where comedy is just part of the delivery and vaginal dryness for older women is not the joke. Grace and Frankie has created a new platform for not just older women, but younger women as well. In that same interview, Fonda shared that younger women are also praising the pair for bringing forward such a stigmatized topic. “And not so old women saying ‘I now see another way forward.’” Female issues are not the only ones in sight as the show covers the experiences that older men go through as well. Romantic relationships, deception, family bonding, and disagreements are just some additional themes explored in this Netflix comedy. Every season viewers have experienced their favorite characters go through new trials and tribulations. With only two seasons left, fans will be able to indulge in these characters as the show reaches its 94 episodes on season seven, making it the longest-running original series on Netflix so far. Grace and Frankie returns to Netflix for its sixth season in January 2020.
