Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman’s The Boy from Medellín is a deep-dive into the life of Colombian-born superstar J Balvin.

The Boy from Medellín gives us unprecedented access to international superstar J Balvin in the lead-up to the biggest concert of his life -- a sold-out performance in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia. This deeply immersive and character-driven film, which was made with an international crew in Colombia and New York, provides a look into the most pivotal and emotionally charged moment of one of the world's biggest stars.
"Representing my country, my city and Latin culture globally is a lifelong pursuit and I'm so proud to be a son of Medellín. I'm honored to be able to tell my story in this beautiful way and working with Matthew on this project was an incredible experience. Thank you to Amazon for making sure this story can be seen around the world", said J Balvin.

In The Boy from Medellín, Heineman gives audiences a behind-the-scenes view into one of the most game-changing moments of Balvin’s life. While Balvin remains one of the most influential Latin musicians in the world, this stunning film also explores his journey to stardom in the city where it all began.

“The Boy from Medellin is a poignant and transparent snapshot of Latin superstar J Balvin’s journey at such a crucial time in Colombia’s history,” said Javiera Balmaceda, Head of International Originals in Argentina, Chile and Colombia, Amazon Studios. “Filmmaker Matthew Heineman is a master of his craft, and beautifully depicts the perspective of an international music icon. We are thrilled to welcome Matthew back to the Amazon family and to share J Balvin’s story with our global customers.”
Matthew shared his excitement to bring Balvin's personal story to life for many reasons, one of them being his openness about the real struggles with mental health.

“While J Balvin is the undeniably talented musical icon behind some of the world’s most popular songs, Jose’s strength and openness in talking about his struggles with mental health drew me to make the film. I was honored that Jose gave us extremely intimate access to this important moment in his life, and the result is a universal story about a man trying to reckon with his place in this world that I hope will resonate with fans and new audiences alike.”
Heineman is an Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, known for his sophisticated and immersive style in films such as City of Ghosts, also released by Amazon Studios, for which he won a DGA Award, A Private War, which earned Heineman a nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First Time Feature Film Director from the Directors Guild of America—making Heineman and Martin Scorsese the only filmmakers ever nominated for both narrative and documentary DGA Awards, Cartel Land, which was nominated for an Academy Award® and won three Primetime Emmy Awards, and the docuseries The Trade. Heineman is currently in production on a documentary about COVID-19 and he is set to write and direct Paradise, a narrative adaptation of the true events of the 2018 Paradise Fire, to be distributed by Focus Features.

“Reggaeton's Global Ambassador" - four-time Latin Grammy winner J Balvin is now one of the top streaming music artists in the world, regardless of language, and has developed a legion of fans worldwide.  Hailed by Billboard as "the biggest breakout act Latin music has seen in many years" and Pitchfork as "the face of modern Reggaeton,” Balvin is leading a second generation of Musica Urbana stars that have propelled Latin music to an unprecedented global embrace. His latest album, Colores, saw both critical acclaim and commercial success. With "Blanco,” “Morado" and “Rojo” going #1, J Balvin became the artist with the most #1-songs on the Latin Airplay charts in history, with 24 of his songs earning that spot over the course of his career.  With his music and impact on the culture, Balvin has cemented himself as not only a leader of Reggaeton but as a torchbearer of the new state of Latin music by continuously expanding the limits of the genre and paving the way for "la nueva escuela”.

From Our Time Projects, producers are Heineman, Juan Camilo Cruz, Myles Estey and Joedan Okun. Executive Producers are Scooter Braun, Allison Kaye, Scott Manson and Jennifer McDaniels on behalf of SB Projects, Fabio Acosta, José Álvaro Osorio Balvín, Jenna Millman and Juan Diego Villegas.
The Boy from Medellín will make its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

'Murder in the Woods' Available for In-Home Viewing

Picture
written and produced by Yelyna De León (Will and Grace, A Better Life) and directed and produced by Mexican filmmaker Luis Iga Garza (The Call), Murder in the Woods is an award-winning slasher film. The fun yet frightening thriller stars an exclusively multicultural cast in non-stereotypical roles, including José Julián (A Better Life, Shameless), Jeanette Samano (ISA, Female Fight Squad), Chelsea Rendon (Vida, Bright), Catherine Toribio (Jane the Virgin), Jordan Diambrini
(The Outfield) and Kade Wise (Empire). It also features Danny Trejo (Machete), Soledad St. Hilaire (Beatriz at Dinner), Kurt Caceres (Better Call Saul, Dexter) and Rolando Molina (American Dad!, Next Friday).
Picture
Murder in the Woods is centered on a group of college friends who plan a getaway to celebrate a birthday party at a desolate cabin in the woods. Against his grandmother’s (Soledad St. Hilaire) demands, Jesse (José Julián), a loner-type decides to go on a trip with his friends. He is immediately smitten with Fernanda (Jeanette Samano), a sweet girl from Chicago whom he hasn’t seen in years. She is in town visiting her loudmouth cousin, Chelsea (Chelsea Rendon), who is ready to celebrate her birthday and plans to let loose with her boyfriend Gabe (Jordan Diambrini). Tagging along at the last second are Jule (Kade Wise), the class clown pothead, and the very out-of-his-league Celeste (Catherine Toribio). Soon after arriving to the mysterious cabin in the woods, the group of teens discover the dark secret it holds, which forces them to fight for their lives.
“I realized that this type of film had never been done in English for a mainstream audience, where Latinos and people of color are the leads and they are not portrayed in stereotypical ways,” says Director Luis Iga Garza. “This is why, while developing this indie feature, we were very conscious of making sure that there would be a diverse cast in lead roles.”

“For us, it’s important for this story to be universal, but being Mexican-American, it was also important for the script to include cultural Latino references such as El Dia de los Muertos, The Chupacabras, and other stories that are recognizable,” says writer and producer Yelyna De León. “We purposely showed authentic moments, such as the altars to honor our ancestors, and blessings when we leave the house, memorable experiences that we share with our families.”
Breaking diversity barriers in Hollywood with its multicultural cast and filmmakers, Murder in the Woods is hailed as an “…eerie …hellacious throwback to old school slasher films” (Humberto Guida, LATV).

The horror premiered at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara in LA (FICG in LA) at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, thrilling audiences and selling out in 24 hours. During the festival run, the film won nine awards, including Best Film at the LA Skins Film Festival and XicanIndie Film Fest, in addition to Best Supporting Actor (Kade Wise), Best Sound Design and Best Soundtrack at the Macabre Faire Film Festival in New York, as well as the Panavision New Filmmaker Grant.

The film opened in drive-ins and theaters nationwide in August and is still playing in select cities. Murder in the Woods is available for in-home viewing on Digital and Video on Demand platforms September 18, 2020.
Here's an exclusive clip and the trailer.

'Así Soy Yo', An Afro-Latina Poema

9/14/2020

Decidí no hace mucho tiempo

Poco a poco voy controlando mi mente
Tengo pensamientos oscuros

Y aprendí a meditar

What It Feels Like
Picture
How is it that today
In this day and age
Men still feel the freedom to attack me?

Get home from work and there they are, ready to devour me
All I know I can control is the hiding of my body
As I try hard not to show an inch that attracts or objectifies me
But it doesn't matter
No matter how much I hide, your imagination survives
Loud and clear through the lust in your eyes
Sometimes I jog with the middle fingers up
As I pass another man working outside his land
Laugh it off, I know it’s funny
But I get some satisfaction from it

I guess it’s simply the acknowledgment,
I see you
The way you look at me
I bet your daughter's think you’re a saint
Perhaps your wife deems you worthy
But all I see is a man who objectifies me
Who wishes he’d undress me
With every step you’re in me
You disgust me

But I do nothing else because I fear you
Because I know you’re stronger

Despite the advancements the law still serves you
I wish I could just curse you
I get angry when I feel your looks
When you speak your mind and still, I fear to speak mine

How is it that today
In this day and age
After all the marches
All the fight
Some of us are still in fear for our lives?

I ache because as I age I feel more afraid
My sister’s growing up, and this is what’s ahead?
What the hell are we fighting for?
Why aren’t more men?
The ones who still respect?

They don’t understand how it feels
Walking outside with fear
A stronger, bigger, louder creature

Why? Just why?

    "Live"

    by Jessica G Ferrer
    Think of the painted lady.
Its short lived life is colorful,

    It's bright.
    Unless interrupted, it carries on.
    It flies...

Fulfilling its one and only short lived life. "
