The Story of God with Morgan Freeman
The Story of God with Morgan Freeman explores the evolution of religion throughout the course of civilization and how it's constructed our society. Taking the viewer on a trip around the world, host and narrator Morgan Freeman delves into different cultures and religions to uncover the meaning of life. He visited some of humanity’s greatest religious sites, including Jerusalem’s Wailing Wall, India’s Bodhi Tree, Mayan temples in Guatemala and the pyramids of Egypt. He traveled with archaeologists to uncover the long-lost religions of our ancestors, such as those at the 7500 B.C. Neolithic settlement Çatalhöyük in Turkey. He immersed himself in religious experiences and rituals all around the world, and became a test subject in scientific labs to examine how the frontiers of neuroscience are intersecting the traditional domain of religion. | Over the past few months, I’ve traveled to nearly 20 cities in seven different countries on a personal journey to find answers to the big mysteries of faith. |
Each episode focuses on a different question:
1. Creation – Are there similarities among the religious creation stories from around the world? How do they compare with the scientific theory of the creation of the cosmos and the dawn of civilization? 2. Who Is God? – How has the perception of God evolved over human history? Is God just an idea, and if so, can we find evidence of a divine presence in our brains? 3. Evil – What is the root of evil and how has our idea of it evolved over the millennia? Is the devil real? The birth of religion may be inextricably tied to the need to control evil. | 4. Miracles – Are miracles real? For many believers, miracles are the foundation of their faith. Others regard miracles as merely unlikely events on which our brains impose divine meaning. Belief in miracles, however we define them, could be what gives us hope and drives us to turn possibility into reality. 5. End of Days – Violent upheaval and fiery judgment fill popular imagination, but was the lore of apocalypse born out of the strife that plagued the Middle East two millennia ago? The true religious meaning of the apocalypse may not be a global war, but an inner revelation. 6. Resurrection – How have beliefs in the afterlife developed, and how has our reaction to the afterlife changed the way we live this life? Now that science is making such rapid advances, we may soon be confronted with digital resurrection. What will that do to our beliefs? |
“I’ve sung the call to prayer at a mosque in Cairo, taken meditation lessons from the Buddhist leader of the oldest line of reincarnating Lamas, discussed Galileo with the head of the Papal Academy of Sciences and explored the first instructions for the afterlife rendered in hieroglyphs inside the pyramids. In some places I found answers, and others led to more questions | |

From the Last Supper to his rising, the final hours of Jesus of Nazareth will be portrayed in a two-hour musical event, 'The Passion'.
The "greatest story ever told" is reminded every year with images, books, stories and live events. From the Last Supper to his rising, the final hours of Jesus of Nazareth will be portrayed in a two-hour musical event, The Passion. As hundreds of people carry a 20-foot, illuminated cross from Champion Square outside the Superdome to the live stage at Woldenburg Park on the banks of the Mississippi River, a carefully selected cast will perform live. The story will develop at some of New Orleans’ most iconic locations. Singer and actor Jencarlos Canela will be playing Jesus, "the biggest icon to ever walk the earth," as he describes. Canela told us he understands the responsibility of this performance and it's one he's taken very seriously. He said, "As a unit, as a world, as a race we need to hear this message too." He spoke on his experience with the cast. "Some of us are getting together for the first time. The story really brought us together." Prince Royce, whom he's worked with before will be playing Peter. "It was good seeing him [Royce] again. But Chris Daughtry [Judas] has become my brother... Like we have a bromance. I'm talking about Judas and I were chilling all the time," he said playfully. | Canela also expressed his respect for Daughtry as an individual and as an artist. "In all seriousness, this guy is gonna blow all of you away." The cast also includes Seal, who will be interpreting Pontius Pilate and Trisha Yearwood as Mary. What makes this show different?Set in modern day, the music will not be traditional. Music producer Adam Anders (Glee, Rock of Ages) arranged a variety of popular music, including “Unconditional” from Katy Perry. Jencarlos affirmed the bible was not just a guide, but also strictly followed and respected. "What's special about this story is that we've respected the bible at it's entirety. The texts being told, the story has not been altered. We are doing it as it says in the bible. When you hear the words spoken by me, you'll be able to find them in the bible word by word what I'm saying. There's a committee based on faith supervising every text and every piece of it. You won't feel that the story's been changed because we've never wanted to do that." He exhorts all generations to join and experience it together. "If you as a grandfather, as a father want a connection with your son, you have to learn and know how to speak to our generation." |
Narrated by Tyler Perry, The Passion will begin at 8pm on March 20th on Fox.
