Picture
Hailed by Critics as a “Profoundly moving portrait,” an “Appeal to your heart and gut” and a “Gripping story, eloquently told,” He Named Me Malala is set to debut globally in 171 countries and 45 languages, Including on Nat Geo Mundo in Spanish.

“This incredible and critically acclaimed film left movie audiences applauding this young woman’s journey and left them wanting to make a difference. And now, in continuation of our partnership with Fox Searchlight Pictures, we are bringing this important film to an even larger audience with the exclusive global broadcast television premiere,” said Courteney Monroe, CEO, National Geographic Global Networks. “We are extremely proud and honored to have dedicated National Geographic’s collective resources to bring awareness of Malala’s advocacy for girls’ education to our global audience.”

National Geographic’s partnership on this film began with the theatrical release and will continue through the global television premiere. Support includes all of the resources of the National Geographic Channels as well as through the National Geographic Society and National Geographic Partners in National Geographic Magazine, National Geographic Digital Media, National Geographic Education Programs, National Geographic Kids and more.

The robust education program for the film includes free education resources, discussion and curriculum guides, a service learning Toolkit, Books for Change, a Map Maker Interactive, and can be found here.  Additionally, efforts to expose students to Malala’s inspiring story resulted in over 180,500 students globally seeing the film in theaters, and in the U.S. reaching students in all 50 states.

The documentary offers a look into Malala’s life both before and after the attack. She was 15 at the time of the incident, when she was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education. The shooting sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. Malala miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth,” “Waiting for Superman”) examines how Malala, her father, Zia, and her family are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. The film delivers an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl’s life — from her close relationship with her father, who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the United Nations to joking around at home with her parents and brothers.

See the story of a young woman who did not stop, but instead chose to fight. Not because of her, but because of many other women who just like her still seek freedom and equality. She said,
"There's a moment that you have to choose whether to be silent or to stand up."

ROGER CORMAN’S 'DEATH RACE 2050'

An outrageous action-packed film and reboot of the original Death Race 2000, Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 began filming February 8 in Peru. Filled with the full-throttle mayhem and black-hearted humor, this all-new film drops the flag on a phalanx of automotive gladiators who earn points for killing pedestrians — and their fellow drivers.

Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 is an original release from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The film will be available exclusively on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD in 2016.

In the decades since well-known independent film pioneer and Academy Award winner Roger Corman first put the iconic anti-hero Frankenstein into the driver’s seat in Death Race 2000, this over-the-top cult classic has hurtled headlong toward cinematic immortality.

Death Race 2000 has inspired a growing fan base that continues to propel the popular franchise as it marks the 40th anniversary of its original release.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me and millions of Death Race 2000 fans to experience the intensity, thrills and dark humor of the original, fueled by a terrific young cast, spectacular vehicles and side-splitting action, literally”
said Corman. “Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 puts the pedal to the metal to bring this enduring franchise to a whole new level.”

SYNOPSIS

In the not-too-distant future, America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government that keeps the masses placated with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, where a motley assortment of drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for running down pedestrians and killing each other. The reigning champion and popular favorite is half-man, half-machine Frankenstein — but little does he know he’s taken on a rebel spy as his co-pilot.

First Film by Puerto Rican Filmmaker to Receive National Distribution Through
AMC Independent™

A heartwarming and emotional drama is coming to select theaters and it's one you don't want to miss. Directed by Michael May, 30 Days With My Brother follows two brothers from Puerto Rico as they forcefully face their past alone. The drama stars Omar Mora and Adrián Núñez in a highly emotional look at the lives of Jonathan (Adrián Núñez) and Alexis (Omar Mora). The brothers who were separated at a young age by a horrific tragedy, reunited after 17 years. Both living the lives they chose, one a doctor with a secret and the other holding on to the past. 30 Days With My Brother also stars Stefy Garcia, Evelyn Michelle, Amy Schloerb and Enrique Fosse.

Omar Mora is the first Puerto Rican from the island to produce a film resulting in national distribution in the states through AMC Independent™.  A feat not to be taken lightly, Mora has been working towards this goal since he began his writing career in 2012 with the intention of documenting his stories and producing them into feature films.  As a member of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), Mora has benefitted from their
Picture
programs and workshops and has learned the ins and outs of independent filmmaking. It was at the 2015 NALIP Media Summit where Mora learned about AMC Independent™  through the workshop, The Big Screen: How Tech Enhances Movie Distribution presented by AMC Theatres.  Led by AMC Theatres' Nikkole Denson-Randolph, the workshop provided Mora with the knowledge and tools needed to successfully distribute his film in the US.

"The AMC workshop I attended last summer was one of the best experiences ever...I received so much valuable information which is currently helping me market my film," said Mora about the workshop.  He added, "I attended so many workshops and conferences at The Summit and learned so much, that it gave me the confidence to self-distribute my film, something I never thought I would do."

AMC Independent™ dedicates over 20% of their theaters to showing independent films throughout the year, including AMC-exclusive releases. Their goal is to engage and inspire audiences and at the same time, give distribution to independent filmmakers.  A great way to showcase unseen talent and support it.

30 Days With My Brother  will open on April 8, 2016 with limited distribution in select markets through AMC Independent™.

The Witch Opens in Theater's today. Here's what Writer/Director Robert Eggers and Actors told us about the film

A look Into 'THE WITCH' WITH THE MAKERS AND THE ARTISTS

A reflection of evil as a society and as individuals, The Witch takes you into a journey, that while terrifying, is also eye opening. The Redbury Hotel in Hollywood, CA was home to a press day where Iconic Chica Magazine shared an intimate setting to discuss moviemaking. First up were writer/director Robert Eggers and lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy.
Picture
Robert, who is from New England recalls having witch nightmares growing up. He tells us he’s always been interested in what he labels the “genre of the past.” He explains, “New England’s past is very much part of my consciousness and I’ve always been obsessed with witches and had lots of witch nightmares all for my life. I felt like I had a way into this that would be unique… In the 17th century, the real world and the fairy tale world were the same thing. So people, when they accused innocent woman of witchcraft, this meant something really specific to everyone which was like she is a fairy tale ogrest anti mother. She’s capable of doing all the things that she does in this film. It’s not just a name.”

The Witch gathers the elements of witchcraft, black magic and possession while telling the story of a united family who falls apart due to frightful developments. The story progressively intensifies for both the family and the viewer. Thomasin, who is victimized repeatedly, reveals her thoughts in an unexpected turn of events. Anya Taylor-Joy brings the oldest daughter, Thomasin to life. Taylor confesses she did no research for her character, as she did not find it necessary. “There was something about the script that just made sense.” She admits she loves the genre and is no stranger to it. “I love fairy tales. I love magic. I also really like dark fairy tales. It felt like the perfect first film for me to do… I believe in magic but I’m not scared of it.” To that, Robert adds, “These pre-Disney fairytales are great unconscious explorations of family dynamics to think about.” He also points out that in this film, the mother and father are both present and biological.

Following Robert and Anya, was our second and final roundtable interview with Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie. The two play husband and wife and parents to Thomasin, Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw), Mercy (Ellie Grainger), and Jonas (Lucas Dawson). Beginning, we talked about initial thoughts on reading the script and joining this project to which Ralph replies, “It’s a powerful period piece.” He explains, “The thing that stroke me when I first read it was how modern the concerns of the family [were]… I had a lot of sympathy for him [William] and the position he’s in and the decisions he makes. Whether they’re good or bad they just seem very real.” Similarly Kate adds, “I just loved the whole story with us in the drama of the family. I was also so interested in what it was like to be a woman then. Who had to hide her affair to husband or affair to God but had not much say in our own life.”
As artists, there’s always something you hope to achieve whether that is for yourself or for your audience. We asked them if there was anything they’d hope viewers take away from their characters. Ralph answered, “I think from my character’s point of view it’s all about that pride of recognizing why you’re making the decisions you are and don’t try to hide behind something else. I think that’s what William does is that he justifies everything by ‘It’s Gods will. It’s God’s will.’ Actually it’s not at all. It’s your own pride. Because nobody else is making you do it. It’s your decision. Take responsibility for your own decisions rather than try to pass it on to somebody else.” Kate’s character had a lot of depth. She describes, “My character isn’t a good puritan because she is questioning everything.” What she also believes to be fascinating for viewers is the mother-daughter relationship. “It was complicated in a lot of ways. That was interesting to me because… Thomasin’s just getting to the age where she could start bearing children. Having her own children and her whole life’s beginning and my child bearing years are over.”

In The Witch Robert Eggers constructs the strict austerity when women were seen as symbols of darkness and evil. Eggers explains, “The witch that I’m showing here is specific to the past. Even if you think that evil witches only exist in the minds of ignorant people, it did exist in the minds of the mass consciousness of the early modern period. And the ramifications of people’s belief in the evil witch as a reality has gone throughout time and it’s messing up with us today the fear of female power and turning that into a monster. So that’s why this is important and I think that even wickens could potentially appreciate the film.”

The Witch is in theaters Friday, February 19.
