A FRIEND OF YORK SHARES INSIGHT...
Q&A:What are some characteristics you remember dearly of her? Always immaculate and very glamorous! What was your friendship like? Lovely. She mentored me. Giving me guidance with the do's and don'ts of Hollywood. What did she pass on to you as an actress? She gave me lots of tips. Not so much a teaching method, but tips about Marilyn. She did meet her [Marilyn] and was able to help me with the voice and some of her mannerisms off screen. What about her did you find most appealing? I loved her drive to the very end! She was the ultimate Hollywood glam! She was also very funny and that never changed, even when she was sick. Any stories you hold of the two of you? We were at our mutual friend Pepper Jay's birthday and sang happy birthday to her together as Marilyn. Would you agree she enjoyed playing the villain, given that many memorable roles she plays the villainess? Oh yes, she loved that role! Fun! She didn't say too much about it, but I know she loved it. If you could describe her in one word, what would you say? Glamorous. A wonderful Hollywood actress and a dear friend to many.

Let us celebrate another release with strong female characters! |
Roadside Attractions had its strongest opening of the year with Miguel Arteta's and Mike White's satirical comedy Beatriz at Dinner. On five NY and LA screens the film grossed an estimated $150,160 for an estimated PSA of $30,032, and notably placed #1 at The Landmark in LA. Beatriz garnered fantastic reviews since its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, including career-best accolades for star Salma Hayek in the title role. The film is drawing a mix of audiences, both younger and older, and both Latino and non-Latino. Roadside expects a very strong Sunday box office in line with the performance of films appealing to a significant Latino audience. |
While promoting the film, both Hayek and Arteta did an entire complement of news shows, where the story of Beatriz as an immigrant in LA had particular resonance. Mike White's script and Miguel Arteta's acute direction have captured the current cultural moment and audiences are responding.
The filmmakers, Hayek, Lithgow and the entire cast supported the film extensively in traditional and digital media, and their social media support throughout the campaign elevated the trailer to more than 25million views on Beatriz's Facebook page alone, a historical high for any Roadside release.
The film expands in exclusive runs in the top 25 markets on June 16 and nationwide on June 23.

Take time to talk about how you feel with yourself. | Buy yourself nice underwear. Something that makes YOU feel confident. Whatever that is, you don't need to tell anybody. |
Call your mom and tell her you love her. Even if you're mad at her. There's no time like the present. | Even if you don't shave your entire vagina, which is totally cool. Trim it, keep it short and clean. Make sure the sides of your legs are not hairy, including your inner thighs. Helps with a confidence boost. It's female hygiene. |
Take a day once in a while to explore a new place. By yourself. And I'm not talking about going out of state or the country (but by all means if you can, go for it).
-Go to a new coffee shop. Order something. Sit and have that by yourself.
-Go for a walk.
-Explore your city.
-Explore your neighborhood.
Maybe some of these don't work for you at all. But giving them a chance -if you haven't done so already- could be worth your while.
Smile back at yourself in the mirror from time time in the most honest way possible.
Thank you for reading and have a beautiful day.

THE FIGHT

I walk out the door. I don't even look back. Not sure I can. Not sure I want to.
I walk. I walk.
I walk. I walk.
I look up at the half moon. Cloudy skies, but still I can see it. I see a star. Just one.
I lean against a pole that holds both a stop sign and the street name. One I cannot remember. I just know that I breathe. I can breath the fresh breeze. Not too cold. Not hot at all. Just right.
Cars drive by.
A plane flies through the clouds. Still close enough. Right above me.
Slowly. I walk.
Faster. I walk faster to the beat of the music playing at the beat of my hearts emotions.
I got this. I am strong.
I walk back.
I walk back in the direction I walked away from.
Here I go.
I’m afraid.
It’s so free out here.
The breeze in my face… my hair blows back, away from my face.
It feels so good. So free.
I’m afraid.
If I go back in, when will I come back out?
I walk. I keep walking toward that door.
I look down. Slow down.
But then I keep walking.
I see light ahead, and the door I’m walking past on my right, the light is off.
I walk toward the light.
I stop one foot in front and the other heading back.
I look left and look right.
I turn my foot looking ahead around, to match the other.
One foot behind the other I walk… and turn.
I look at the door. Here I come.
It’s warm inside.

After high school, every student chooses a different path. Many may head onto college, while others choose a different route and decide to join the army, volunteer work in foreign countries, or whatever their heart desires. Those of us who decided to attend college immediately after high-school may all relate to similar freshmen experiences.
Every path chosen inevitably comes with its own challenges, including the university life.
Going into college as a freshmen, I did not expect much from people or classes, I just figured it would be a new, more difficult environment. I usually had in mind that students were going to be mean, and there would really be no point in asking for anyone’s advice, and boy was I wrong. There were moments in my time of crisis where I needed urgent help or assistance, and thankfully, good people still exist. As pessimistic as I was, I decided to let good people know they were very much appreciative. Anyway, the point is to let others know when they are doing a good job, and be as optimistic as you can. |
Not only did I enter freshmen year with a negative mindset, but I came to acknowledge that classes were not as bad as other panned them to be. I remember taking Chemistry, thinking, “Oh man, this will be the end of me.” It was definitely not. Simply focus, listen to your professors, read on a daily basis, and you will do more than well. Best part is, you will still have time to have a social life, not to a major extent, but still a decent one.
To further extend my thoughts and feelings on the matter of college experiences, I decided to ask a couple friends of mine on their thoughts and advice to others heading into college, and their own feeling on the matter in general:
To further extend my thoughts and feelings on the matter of college experiences, I decided to ask a couple friends of mine on their thoughts and advice to others heading into college, and their own feeling on the matter in general:
Giancarlo: Well since I was little, I have always thought to myself that I was eventually going to be a college student; I was basically told that this was the correct path to follow. The transition from high school to college was indeed a big change, but it was one that I already expected and so, I didn't really get all emotional about it. As I progressed on my first courses, I felt like I was doing well, I had a positive mind and it worked out for me. What I lacked, was a good study habit, mine wasn't that good, since I never really had to study while in high school. Therefore, I started planning my study sessions each day and organizing my schedule. I did study a lot, but I found out studying in sessions worked best for me. Every 1 or 2 hours I would stop and play some video games and then I would continue. It is true, that it doesn't matter how much you study, work always stack up and that is one of the main issues students face. I still deal with that problem, but I've progressed, by organizing and planning everything ahead. I learned that reading about the material of the current lecture before class is the best way to understand the subject.
Loraine: College sucks, there is no time to play video games or have a full social life. No, in reality, although that might be true, college is full of new experiences where you are carefully sculpted into an adult. The main thing I like is that I decide what I want, and which path to choose. | Valerie: To the new “prepas” out here: For me college at the beginning was sort of chilled, and I did not go out much. Then it started to get harder, but I started going out more, so yeah, as you can see, not a great mix. At first, it was basically impossible to create this perfect balance to do absolutely everything I wanted. I believe that balance is very essential, but you'll figure it out eventually. Everyone has a different experience in college, so you can’t go expecting how things might turn out to be, just be you and enjoy the fun times college has to offer. |
Stephanie: College is where you truly discover who you are meant to be. It's a difficult road, with many bumps in the way, but at the end it's all worth it. Every experience you have counts; including failing exams, pulling all-nighters, gaining 10 pounds per semester or getting an A on the class that sucked the living out of you. You laugh, but you also cry, you make new friends as you lose old friends and, maybe, you even find the love of your life. Everyone always says that high school years are the best, but they are wrong; college years are the ones that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
We all have different, yet similar insights on college experiences. It is really just a matter of oneself. Allow yourself to learn, to fail, to be who you want to be in the best way possible, yet stay positive throughout the whole ride, even if it seems impossible.
